SEIICHIRO MAKI SOLO EXHIBITION

DOTSTARS

EXHIBITION STATEMENT
The first shooting star I ever saw was breathtakingly beautiful.
Yet no matter how many times I looked up hoping to see another, I never saw one again.
The wonders of our planet do not reveal themselves simply because we spend time or money seeking them. We are fortunate to be present when a miraculous moment occurs. Perhaps that is why we remember such scenes as vividly as if they happened yesterday.
For this exhibition, I use an optical illusion in which white dots appear to glow darkly, transforming them into the twinkling of stars and depicting the extraordinary scenes of our world.
I invite you to experience those fleeting moments of wonder that arrive in the quiet of the night.

White dots seem to glow in the dark.
An optical illusion becomes starlight.
In DOTSTARS, white dots appear to shimmer darkly through an optical illusion, resembling the light of distant stars. Through this visual phenomenon, the works evoke extraordinary moments that emerge unexpectedly in the stillness of night.

DETAIL
Painted one by one, by hand.
Thousands of squares and dots are painted individually with a small flat brush. The slight variations of the hand remain visible as the image slowly takes shape.
