ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Chitoku Ishihana creates “Ishihana,” rock balancing works made by standing natural stones shaped over immense spans of time.
Treating their beautiful, fleeting forms as flowers, he presents the tension and release held in the instant the stones become still. The intimate scale of stones held in the hand is also central to this practice.
In the gallery, natural stones of many sizes and shapes rise while supporting one another at tiny points of balance. Each configuration exists only once, and the time spent searching for stillness is itself part of the work.

During the exhibition, Chitoku Ishihana will create improvised rock balancing works using stones in the gallery.
A portion of the viewing fee will support recovery efforts following the Kumamoto earthquakes. Visitors may also bring their own stones.
ARTIST
Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in November 1969. He began working as a Japanese rock balancing artist in March 2011.
Working closely with each stone, he draws out the tension and beauty held in a single moment of stillness.
In 2020 he established the Rock Balancing Research Institute_Ishihana. His activities include developing and selling the tabletop rock-balancing base “Marutaza” and organizing the online art festival Ishihana Exhibition from 2021 to 2023.
He has appeared in numerous television and media programs, including NHK’s Bi no Tsubo, and received the Poem Prize at the 3rd Japan Photo Picture Book Awards.
