WORK WITH KAKISHIBU

A living material.
Color shaped by hand.

Kakishibu has long been used to protect and finish objects in Japan. Its warm, earthy tones reveal the character of paper and cloth. Join Chie & Rei during their “Kakishibu Art” exhibition and discover the material through making.

TWO EXPERIENCES, ONE WORKSHOP

Two crafts.
One hands-on session.

Everyone makes both pieces, whichever time you choose. You do not need to choose between the two projects.

Painting kakishibu onto a traditional ikkanbari bowl
EXPERIENCE 01

Finish an ikkanbari bowl
with kakishibu.

Apply a persimmon-tannin finish with a brush to a bowl made using ikkanbari, a traditional craft technique involving Japanese paper. Explore how the surface changes with each brushstroke.

The finished bowl is not food-safe. Please use it to hold small objects rather than food or drinks.

EXPERIENCE 02

Create a kakishibu
stencil tote bag.

Use stencils to add a kakishibu pattern to a cloth tote bag. Enjoy the natural color and make something you can use in everyday life.

Every morning and afternoon session includes BOTH the ikkanbari bowl finish and the stencil tote bag.

WHAT YOU WILL MAKE

What you'll take home.

Two handmade pieces, each with its own color and character. Take a little of this traditional material into your everyday life.
